The overlay’s full-screen takeover isn’t a flaw, but it does hinder multitasking. While it’s active, you’re stuck interacting with the chatbot and can’t access other apps. Our findings from last year suggested Google was addressing this gap by introducing a minimize option. That solution now appears to be reaching users.
Several reports (1, 2, 3) indicate a new minimize button is showing up on the Gemini overlay. The interface matches what we uncovered back in June, featuring a persistent «Minimize Gemini» button throughout the AI conversation. The initial design lacked this button, which might have prevented many from finding the feature.

With this function, the overlay can be reduced in size, letting you browse and scroll through other apps while Gemini handles your requests behind the scenes. Once minimized, it shrinks into a circular bubble marked with the Gemini logo, accompanied by a text box. That text explains you can tap to enlarge the overlay, drag the bubble elsewhere on the screen, or close Gemini entirely.
Given the limited number of sightings, the button isn’t yet widespread. Google seems to be rolling it out incrementally.
